Pothole
Inspired by our favorite alt-weekly publications and enabled by our unemployment, a journalist friend and I decided to make a zine dedicated to the local happenings around Saint Paul. We solicited writing and art submissions from local creatives, designed the publication’s layout, and worked with a local printer to produce several hundred copies of each issue. The project lasted only 2 issues produced over a couple months, at which point we were both fully employed and lacked the time to continue it. Still, we learned a lot, met a lot of cool people while working on it, and made something we were both very proud of.
For the design of the zine, I made choices that optimized it for cheap and efficient production. It was printed double-sided on a single piece of thin 18” x 24” paper stock with only black ink. It would then be cut and folded into a 6-page zine with front and back cover, as well as a special full-size feature on the back side.
